Cool canals Guides & Waterways Directory

The spirit of art is rooted firmly at the core of canal life...

Canal art materialises in many forms of painting and sculpture yet, less visibly and more fundamentally, the real spirit of art is rooted firmly at the very core of canal life... When you walk in the world of canals, you are really following an historic art trail, created by ordinary canal folk who would not call themselves artists.

The unexplained origins of traditional folk art, 'roses & castles', add mystery to the landscape created by the awesome aesthetics of canal engineering. Even the quietly rusting signposts from a bygone era that line the towpaths are works of art that instill us with pictures of the past and give a flavour of working life on the waterways.

Today, the holiday season lights up with canalside shops lining their shelves with canalia, bandanas and everything from 'canal scene' placemats to ornamental duck doorstops!
Everything whispers about the creative heart of the waterways.
